Dates: Jun 2007 to Dec 2008
How did the project start?
As an Interventional Radiologist 'x-ray surgeon' I use a lot of equipment. I thought it would be useful if we could post our comments and experiences of using equipment on a website for colleagues and the manufacturers to read. It would also give us one place to look for information on which device to use for a procedure. Some of us are quite passionate about the kit we use!
What options did you consider?
I considered a blog, but this was too restrictive once the page became large. I also tried a mashup but it wouldn't do quite what I needed.
What help and expertise did you receive?
Some advice from Business Link, legal firms, searching the web and from 'Chocolate Grape' web design.
Did you face any challenges or learn any lessons?
The main challenge has been time! I already am a full time consultant and this is mainly done in the evenings. My role with equipment manufacturers has also been reversed, with me trying to 'sell' my idea to them. Some are understandably worried about adverse comments losing them sales. I think it is better that they find out sooner rather than later.
I have learned a lot about business and marketing in the last six months and it's been a steep learning curve.
What are the outcomes and how has it improved your business?
I am currently uploading devices to the site, then publicising it to my colleagues via national and international societies. Even now we seem to be generating quite a bit of interest.
What are your plans for the future?
Increase awareness of the site amongst my colleagues and encourage comments. I have recruited an expert panel of reviewers for devices and we are currently posting reviews on a regular basis.
Hits on the site are up to 1200 per month now, with over 7500 pages viewed in the last month. We would like to see this continue to grow!
