How did the project start?

The Test Factory development started back in 2005 following a recognised need for authoring and managing online tests. This followed a personal requirement within recruitment, with a need to assess and match skills that is not possible from a CV. This developed to using online tests to support training, learning, compliance and customer services.

What options did you consider?

When the project began, ADO.NET did not exist and therefore development started using other Microsoft .NET technologies.

What help and expertise did you receive?

We were fortunate to benefit from support from Microsoft to develop using tomorrow's technologies, prior to its commercial release.

Did you face any challenges or learn any lessons?

As we were amongst the first to develop an application using this technology, there was little experience, resource or support for our development team.

What are the outcomes and how has it improved your business?

Through the use of ADO.NET entity framework in developing The Test Factory, we have been able to substantially minimise the amount of code and improve timescales to product release. The biggest benefit is in the ongoing enhancement of our application, where both the speed and opportunity to develop have been massively increased; a huge win for a growing online software solution.
As we are amongst the first to use the technology to build an application, Microsoft are looking at using The Test Factory as a case study to profile the benefits of ADO.NET entity framework; a huge accolade to our business and development team.

What are your plans for the future?

The key to our continued success is the development of our application, both to further its features and provide additional benefits to our blue-chip clients. This has been possible due to the use of ADO.NET and will have a significant impact on the future development of our business.
