Dates: Aug 2008 to Oct 2008
How did the project start?
moShine were commissioned by The Great North Run Cultural Programme to produce 30 minutes of visuals to accompany a joint commission with the acclaimed music composer Michael Nyman.
Our visuals were to be projected behind the Michael Nyman Band as they were to perform live all across the world.
Regular collaborator and award winning director, Richard Fenwick, recommended us to work on the project based on the style and high level of quality of our previous work with him.
What options did you consider?
We considered producing the visuals entirely in 3D however this would have been unfeasible in the short timescale.
Therefore we utilised pre-existent footage, motion capture data and filmed new slow motion footage.
What help and expertise did you receive?
Frequent collaborators Richard Fenwick and Loday Gonpo provided creative feedback.
moShine and Michael Nyman also visited the Sports Science department at Leeds Metropolitan University. There we researched biomechanics, biomolecular theory and collected reference footage.
We also visited the Wellcome Trust in London for inspiration.
Did you face any challenges or learn any lessons?
Time was our greatest challenge, therefore we learnt to utilise different media and concentrate on imbuing the visuals with more meaning and less biological detail.
We also learnt further techniques in film, working with motion capture data and live performances.
What are the outcomes and how has it improved your business?
Working to such a tight deadline with such a lengthy duration of visuals to fill our workflow dramatically improved.
Also working with such a world renowned artist such as Michael Nyman elevated our reputation to a new level.
What are your plans for the future?
moShine plan to continue working with our talented and creative projects on further projects worldwide.
