How did the project start?
Public SMS Alert System (PSAS) is a free service for receiving emergency messages about your area. The site is well conceived and stays focussed on its purpose.
What options did you consider?
Our aim was to provide an SMS alerting system that can be applied to a range of scenarios. PSAS is a prototype for a security breach situation such as terrorism.
What help and expertise did you receive?
Support from World-Text in regards to the SMS platform, the mobile industry and accessibility related help from Nomensa.
Did you face any challenges or learn any lessons?
Overcoming the accessibility became a problem but in the end we got it right. Alastair Campbell, an accessibility expert and director of user experience at Nomensa found only minor issues to improve the usability.
What are the outcomes and how has it improved your business?
PSAS has attracted encouraging interest and it has proven to the community how vital and reliable such a system is and could even save lives.
What are your plans for the future?
We are now to pursue the project further by adding Location Based Technology and targeting the already interested local authorities in the North East.
